The test consists of three sections: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Quantitative Aptitude (QA). Earlier exam was taken online for 3 hours, with one hour for each section. But in 2020 IIM has decided to conduct the CAT exam in 2 hours with 40 minutes for9 each section due to COVID protocols. The test is conducted every year by any one of the IIMs based on the rotation. The IIMs started this exam for selecting candidates for different Administration Programs. Before 2009, CAT was a paper based test conducted on a single day for all the aspirants. But in the year 2009, it was announced that CAT would be a Computer based Test with 3 sections namely Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension (VARC), Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) and Quantitative Aptitude (QA) for 3 hours with one hour for each section.

Since2014, TCS (TATA CONSULTANCY SERVICES) was conducting CAT Exam to recruit candidates for different programs. TCS bagged a 5 year contract since then TCS collaborated with IIMS for conducting CAT Exams. In August 2011, it was announced that IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) & IISc (Indian Institute of Science) would also use the same CAT scores for their management programmes from 2012-2015 batches instead of JMET (Joint Management Entrance Test).

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR CAT 

The candidate must satisfy all the below specified criteria to appear for CAT Exams:

  • Candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree with 50% aggregate & 45% aggregate for reserved categories & Persons with Disabilities.
  • The bachelor’s degree should be granted by any of the universities consolidated by an act of the central or state body in India. Candidates can also have degree from other instructive organizations built by an act of parliament under section 3 of the UGC Act. Students can have bachelor degree possess an equivalent recognition by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.
  • Competitors appearing for the final year of bachelors degree or any equivalent qualification examination who have finished degree prerequisites & are anticipating results can likewise apply. If any such candidates are selected, they will be permitted to join the program temporarily only if they present a certificate from the principal or any officials of their college or institution. Certificate should express that the competitor has finished every one of the prerequisites for acquiring four year or three year college educational capability on the date of the issue of the certificate.

CAT MARKING SCHEME

CAT Exam pattern have the marking scheme which helps the candidates to get to know the total marks they have scored for each correct answer & also the marks deducted for the incorrect answers.

v  For each correct answer, Three marks will be awarded.

v  For each wrong answer, One mark will be deducted.

v  For unanswered MCQ questions, No marks will be deducted.

v  For unanswered NON MCQ questions, No marks will be deducted.

IIM ADMISSION PROCESS

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are central government owned public business schools offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Doctoral & Executive Programmes. IIMs are the top institutes of management education & research in India, which provide some additional courses in the field of business administrations. The idea of establishing IIMs was first initiated by our beloved first prime minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, and it was first established in the year 1961. Every MBA aspirants dreams to get into an IIM for a management programme & there are mostly 20 IIMs offer PG, Doctoral & Executive Programmes.

Step 1: The very first step of every aspirants is to appear for the Common Aptitude Test conducted by IIMs & GMAT for international candidates. CAT is an highly competitive exam written by approximately 5 lakh candidates starving for over 4318 seats, all courses taken together nearly 12411 seats will be available in all IIMS. There are 3 sections in CAT examination like VARC, DILR & QA.

Step 2 : On clearing the required cut offs, a candidate will be called for either Written test/Group Discussion or Personal Interview. The candidates must provide 2 letters of recommendation from people who know them closely for academic & professional validation. Since 2020 due to COVID protocols, Personal Interview is being conducted online. Personal Interviews are generally taken by IIMs faculties, to check ones soft skills & interpersonal skills. Questions in interview might vary from personal to work & work to academics. Written test is conducted to test ones writing skills & comprehension about the topic given. GD is most commonly conducted test among every other IIMS except a few.

Step 3 : The final selection for admission of candidates are based on certain parameters that may vary for each IIM. The final selection into IIMs will be made strictly on the basis of the CAT/GATE score, final aggregate score / past academic performance, work experience, gender, category, performance in WAT/GD & PI, school board etc.

    1. What is the eligibility criteria for MBA by IIM?

    Candidate must be graduated with 50% aggregate in any stream by recognized university. One must have CAT percentile of 95%+ to get into top IIMs in India. However CAT percentile for every IIMs is different from each other.

     

    1. Age criteria for CAT 2022.
